Lexical and semantic group of names of women’s outwear in Novgorod dialects
Abstract
Clothing is an important element of everyday life indicating both the national and regional identity of people and their property status. This article examines the vocabulary associated with the names of women’s outwear noted in Novgorod dialects in the 19th - early 20th centuries. Among the sources of research were data from the Novgorod regional dictionary, the Dictionary of Russian folk dialects as well as archival and ethnographic sources. The Novgorodian traditional costume of the 19th - early 20th centuries was part of the general Russian costume and was developing in line with the Northern Russian traditions. The main types of the Novgorodian peasant women’s outwear, such as kaftan, ponitok, shugay, shuba, were traditional for the Russian North. The specificity of Novgorodian outwear is that its traditional types existed longer in the peripheral north-eastern districts of Novgorod province. Particularly, some archaic types (such as balakhon and svita) were worn there till the early 20th century. At the same time, new urban types of clothing quickly entered rural life in the more developed southwestern counties. The presented material shows rich variety of the analyzed lexical and semantic group. Thus, the microparadigm “a coat” is represented by such lexemes as geisha, kazatin, polka, and teplomat. As a result of urban influence in the 19th century, such clothes as pal’to, pal’tushka, kazaki (kazachki), etc. appeared in the village. Today, archaic names of clothes have been preserved mainly in the speech of the elderly dialect speakers.
