In the origin of microtoponyms with the root kolod- in the west of the Cherepovets area
Abstract
This article is aimed at nding the prerequisites for the emergence of microtoponyms with the root kolod- in the west of the Cherepovets district in Vologda region. The topic is being developed within the framework of a comprehensive study of the Kolodenskaya volost of the Cherepovets district of the Novgorod province. The former village of Kolodna, the Kolodenka river, Lake Kolodenskoye, (Kolodno(e)), Kolodenskaya volost (Kolodny) are known on this territory. The article presents archaeological data on settlements in the microregion and its surroundings and checks the Finno-Ugric and Slavic theories of origin. The article provides information on the history of the settlement of the microregion in order to clarify the linguistic boundaries. The author comes to a conclusion that, according to archaeologists, along the Kolodenka River and in its immediate surroundings there were Finno-Ugric settlements with preserved Meryan toponymy. Another thing is that there is still no answer among linguists whether the microtoponyms with the root kolod- are of Finno-Ugric or hybrid origin, having both Pro-Baltic and Slavic elements, or this might be a case of re-naming by the Slavs. This work provides grains of facts about the study of Kolodny's Cherepovets naming, which will help in the search for linguistic boundaries and etymology in microtoponymy. As a continuation of this article, archival data have been prepared for written mentions of the toponym with the root kolod- from the 15th century, as well as the possible etymology of the toponyms in this narrow micro-region.
