Abstract

The paper deals with the etymology the North Russian words which might include the suffix -ой- [-oy-]. These are the forms like гу́нобой, гунобо́й [gunoboy] ‘unclear speech’ from the verb гу́нобить [gunbit’] ‘to speak unclear; to speak all together so nothing is clear’ etc.; самото́й [samotoy] ‘Aaron’s rod’, ‘creeper, a kind of ivy’ with the original structure *сумото́й [*sumotoy] from the root -мот- [-mot-] with the prefix су- [su-]; су́похой [supokhoy] ‘air wave spreading from a source’ derived form супоха́ [supokha] ‘hole in an oven for a samovar pipe’ with the initial structure сопуха́ [sopukha] from сопе́ть [sopet’] ‘to give out air’; телесо́й [telesoy] ‘a baby seal’, телеса́й [telesay] ‘id.’, ‘adult seal’ from тел-/телес- [tel-/teles-] with the inner form «fat, well-fed». Also other examples of the suffix -ой- [-oy-] in the Russian lexicon are given.
