Abstract

The article represents the first attempt of a comprehensive description of vocabulary reflecting the traditional crafts of the descendants of the most ancient population of the North-East of Russia—the Yukaghirs. The author examines the trade vocabulary of the group of forest Yukaghirs (Oduls) in onomasiological, structural-semantic, derivational, and ethnolinguistic aspects, analyzes some word-formation models of the Yukaghir language. The author comes to the conclusion that the hunting vocabulary of the forest Yukaghirs is quite numerous and, for the most part, primordial. The most extensive lexical-semantic group consists of names of trade animals and birds based on age and gender characteristics. The most common word-formation method in this vocabulary group is agglutination; word-formation features demonstrate the figurativeness of the trade vocabulary. The analyzed lexical material can later be used in lexicographic practice of preparing thematic dictionaries, in the study of vocabulary and history of the Yukaghir language in schools and universities, as well as in the comparative historical study of the Yukaghir language and culture. The terminology of traditional economic activities requires further research.
