Semantic hypotheses of the emergence of microtoponyms with the root kolod- in the west of the Cherepovets area
Abstract
The article provides a search for the etymology of microtoponyms with the root kolod- in the west of the Cherepovets district of the Vologda region. The research is based on the previous study of the history of settling this territory and verification of the Finno-Ugric and Slavic basis of microtoponyms with the root kolod-. The indicated proper names are analyzed on the basis of dictionaries and linguistic research. Possible etymological versions of microtoponyms with the root kolod- in the studied microareal are proposed on the basis of semantics.
From what exactly the meaning of the kolodenskaya microtopony appeared, the following versions are suggested. Probably, the naming may originate from kaltus — ‘a swampy place, a swamp overgrown with small birch forests’. In case the original name was the name of the Lake Kolodnoye, then the most likely version seems to be from kolodez’ as ‘a pit for ore mining’; in case it originates from the Kolodenka river, then one should account for kolodje as ‘windbreak’; in case of the central settlement of Kolodna, renamed Grishkino — the kolodets of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa.
