Saami loan words in the Russian-language Saami fairylore
Abstract
In this paper we continue the analysis of the Saami lexical data in the Russian cultural context. The research material was based on the texts of Saami fairy tales presented in Russian. Records of 19th-century fairy tales were compared with their later editions in order to verify certain lexical materials. The article offers an analysis of Saami lexemes incorporated in the translated Russian text. It is noted that in the Russian dialects of the White Sea region there are Saami loanwords related to the names of clothing, shoes, household utensils, tools, etc. Some of them are also recorded in folklore texts. The Saami fairytale-related folklore contains a significant number of names of healers, sorcerers, and various mythological characters that appear in Russian texts. In some cases, they appear as an independent unit of the Saami in the Russian translation out of touch with the Saami lexicographical sources. Geographical names in fairy tales’ texts are given in different ways, for example, hydronyms, limnonyms are presented in the Russian translation. There are names of the northern lights, which are presented in different versions.
