Abstract

The present paper deals with the story of creation of a regional dictionary (“The Dictionary of Russian sub-dialects of Karelia and adjoining regions”), which represents lexis taken from the sub-dialects spread on the territory of former Obonezhskaya Pyatina that was a first-level unit of administrative division of Novgorod Land. The author pays a special attention to the core role of A.S. Gerd as an organizer of a research team, that has joined the forces of more than 80 researchers from different parts of Russia to work together on the dictionary mentioned above. The author of the article focuses on the work of Russianists from Petrozavodsk and their contribution to the dictionary creation. A number of organizational problems are described and scrutinized. The author also gives examples of the lexical entries that should be considered as dubitable and makes some arguments for this viewpoint. The author remarks upon a number of general issues of dialect lexicography.
