Abstract

The article considers the Arkhangelsk dialect words of the 19th century registered by Alexander O. Podvysotskiy as identical to the words of the Polish language. The three groups of words are clearly distinguished. The main similarities and differences concerning the word forms and meanings are identified on the basis of contrastive analysis of the words of the 19th century Arkhangelsk dialects and their counterparts from the Polish language that were noted, registered and marked out by Alexander O. Podvysotskiy. Peculiarities of the given examples are also marked and registered considering the features typical of the Arkhangelsk dialects, which makes it possible to estimate the extent of interference and assimilation of the common Proto-Slavic words by the Arkhangelsk dialects. The first group includes the words of the common Proto-Slavic origin. Once again, the examples in this group confirm the commonality of East Slavic and West Slavic languages established on the basis of the Proto-Slavic language, including the examples from the North Russian dialects that to a great extent preserved the features of the old Slavic language. The second group combines the so-called ‘borderline’ words with more distinct Arkhangelsk dialect features being demonstrated in phonological, morphological and semantic aspects. The third group is made up by orthographic forms of the words from the Arkhangelsk dialects of the 19th century which are almost identical to those in the Polish language but with some distinguished semantic peculiarities. Despite many instances of similarity with the words in the Polish language the words of the Arkhangelsk dialects of the 19th century demonstrate characteristic phonetic, orthographic, morphemic and semantic features and can be considered a real linguistic treasure of the Russian culture.
