Lexical means of expressing space in the prose miniatures of A. S. Ulyanov in the Vepsian language
Abstract
The article deals with lexical means reflecting spatial relationships in the prose miniatures of A.S. Ulyanov. The central lexical means of designating spatial relations are predicates that are expressed by the opposition: location/existence and movement/displacement. Lexical meanings of spatial predicates may be very diverse. A differentiated analysis of the verbs of movement/displacement and location/existence is presented, divided into the following groups: verbs of movement with the meaning ‘to oneself/from oneself/there and back again’; verbs of existence, verbs of location in a certain place, verbs with the meaning of appearance and disappearance, manifestations of one's existence by sounding. In addition to predicates, lexical means of expressing spatiality include adverbs and postpositions. The localization of a subject or an object (in a broad sense) is characterized by adverbs; postpositions are used to specify the spatial relationship. The space in miniatures is organized as a dynamic, moving system. The property of dynamism is conveyed by the ratio of the verbs of movement/displacement and location/existence. The lexicological analysis of prose miniatures by A.S. Ulyanov shows their bilingual context; they contain mental features of the Veps, such as lapidarity of speech, restrained communication, and hence the accuracy, concentration on each word, special tension in the expression of semantic attitudes, as well as openness, deliberate understatement of reflection on current events. In the analysis of the cycle of miniatures, the ontological component of these texts as works of a life-meaning character is also noted—their main sense is movement, the idea of transition from one state to another, development and renewal.
