Borrowed vocabulary indicating emotions, feelings, mental actions and states of consciousness in the Vepsian language
Abstract
The author presented an analysis of vocabulary describing human feelings, emotions, mental actions and states of consciousness. The vocabulary under study contains both names (resentment, dear, beloved, sadness, grief, melancholy, boredom) and verbal units (love, be offended, be sad, hope, have fun, rejoice, think, suffer, care, forget, envy). The author considers lexemes with a stem borrowed from the Russian language or that are completely borrowed from Russian. The author examines the word formation of borrowings in order to determine the features of adaptation of the Russian word in the Vepsian language. The scope of application of the borrowed vocabulary is investigated based on the analysis of samples of Vepsian speech extracted from Russian and Finnish sources as well as of the samples of Russian dialectal speech in the Vepsian-speaking area. To determine the origin of some borrowings and the breadth of their distribution in languages related to Vepsian, the author turns to the data of the Russian and Estonian etymological dictionary. When studying the use of the borrowed vocabulary, a comparative analysis of the shades of meaning, emotional coloring of the borrowed lexeme and the Vepsian word with the same lexical meaning (if any) is carried out.
