Abstract
A number of plants’ names in the Finno-Ugric languages are motivated whith ethnonyms or contain ethnonym as a component of composite phytonym. Most of these names are known in the Finnish and Estonian languages, and also in the Udmurt language. In this article we examine about 150 phytonyms. Ethnonym which motivates the name of the plant, usually indicates it’s origin (real or imaginary). In some cases plants’ names containing ethnonyms appear to be calques of scientific names, which penetrated into the dialects.
