Folklore materials from Pinega. Riddles about nature
Abstract
There is the card-index of Pinega dialects in the Institute for Linguistic Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its materials are used in compiling the “Dictionary of Russian Folk Dialects” and are currently being prepared for separate publication. Among the materials of the card-index there are folklore recordings — proverbs, sayings, folk signs, riddles, ditties and other examples from small folklore genres. G. Ya. Simina, under whose leadership dialectological expeditions to Pinega were organized, introduced a part of these folklore materials into scientific circulation. Result of such work became the book “Pinega fairy tales” [Simina 1975] and article “Folk signs and beliefs of Pinega” [Simina 1981]. But the most part of these materials was not included in these works and remained unpublished.
The introductory part of the present article 1) gives a brief overview of the most important studies devoted to the publication and study of Russian riddles, 2) provides views on the inclusion of folklore data in dialect dictionaries, 3) indicates some features of the riddles presented in the Pinega card-index, years and settlements of recordings. The main part of the article presents the most interesting examples of Pinega riddles about nature. The riddles are arranged by thematic groups “Season, time of day”, “Sky and earth, celestial bodies”, “Weather events”, “River”, “Plant world”, “Animal world”.
